Help Us to Feed Others This Holiday Season

SPRINGFIELD, MA [November 9, 2022] – In this season of giving food to those in need, Big Y’s annual Sack Hunger campaign provides funds for the 4 food banks within their 2-state marketing area. In turn, these food banks support local soup kitchens, food pantries, senior food programs, day care centers and many others of the 2100-member agencies that they assist every day. Their goal is to maximize access to nutritious food and other resources that support food security for those at risk of hunger. These 4 food banks are The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Worcester County Food Bank, Greater Boston Food Bank and Connecticut Food Share.

For a $5 donation, a customer can support Sack Hunger from any register at Big Y’s 72 supermarkets, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors or online from November 2 - 23. Every $5 donation brings 10 meals to those in need. Last year, Big Y and their customers donated 5.5 million meals to our community.

Additionally, Big Y has added even more ways to boost this year’s efforts especially for the first week. Big Y will donate an additional 10 cents per pound for every pound of their signature Smart Chicken and USDA Choice Angus Beef sold. In produce and floral departments, additional proceeds will also support the program. Lastly, Big Y has pledged to donate 5 cents for every private label family of brands that they sell throughout the store also for the first week. In addition to the Big Y brand, these other labels include Food Club, Crav’n, Culinary Tours, Full Circle Organics, Wide Awake Coffee, Sweet P’s, Simply Done, Paws, Pure Harmony, Tippy Toes and Top Care. Program guidelines are outlined on their web site.

“Now more than ever, food insecurity is impacting our neighborhoods” says Charles L. D’Amour, Big Y’s president and CEO. “Big Y’s Sack Hunger program is an easy way for everyone to join with us in helping others during the holiday season. We know that our customers and employees are eager to support families across Massachusetts and Connecticut by helping the food banks do their work.”

Over the past 11 years, Big Y’s Sack Hunger program has donated over 34 million meals to those in need. Big Y also donates to the food banks six days a week throughout the year with donations of meat, fresh produce, bakery, grocery, frozen food, and dairy as well as transportation.
